Revised Requirements for Timpani Auditions
TIMPANI AUDITION PROCEDURE (TOTAL OF 100 POINTS)
Tuning: 20 points
The student will use either a pitch pipe or tuning fork to tune 29”
drum to a pitch requested by the adjudicators. Maximum time for this tuning
is 30 seconds.
The student then tunes the 26” drum by ear (no pitch pipe,
tuner, etc.) to one of the following intervals (as requested by the
adjudicators) above the 29” drum: P4, P5, M3, m3. Maximum
time for this tuning is 30 seconds.
Student then tunes 23” drum by ear (no pitch pipe, tuner,
etc.) to one of the following intervals (as requested by the adjudicators)
above the 26” drum: P4, P5, M3, m3. Maximum time for this tuning
is 30 seconds.
Scale: 10 points
The student will be asked to play the F Major scale on the 29” and
26” drums.
The student will use a pitch pipe or tuning fork (no electronic tuners or
other sources) to tune the 29” drum to the tonic of the requested scale.
Maximum time for this tuning is 30 seconds.
The student will then perform the scale (on the 29” and 26”
drums only) in quarter notes, at a minimum tempo of 60 beats per minute,
where the quarter note gets one beat.
Solo: 70 points (35+35)
The student will perform two excerpts from the current solo; each excerpt
will be worth 35 points. A pitch pipe or tuning fork may be used for
the initial tuning for the first excerpt only; all other tuning changes must
be made by ear.Maximum time for the initial tuning is 30 seconds.
