PMEA District 7 Jazz Band Audition Information

2009 DISTRICT JAZZ BAND AUDITION MATERIALS

PART A - Prepared Pieces

  • ALL SAXOPHONES
    • Confirmation, pp.1-3 (updated 10/17/08) of the Charlie Parker Omnibook, (Eb edition). There is NO CD accompaniment.

  • TRUMPET
    • Play the etude Friends, found on page 32 in the book Jazz Conception, by Jim Snidero without the CD accompaniment.

  • TROMBONES
    • Play the etude Friends, found on page 32 in the book Jazz Conception, by Jim Snidero without the CD accompaniment.

  • GUITAR
    • My Glowing Moment, pp. 30-31 from the book Effective Etudes for Jazz, by Jeff Jarvis with track 34 from the accompaniment CD.
    • Comp 2 choruses of Bird Blues, Aebersold Vol. 2
    • Play four choruses of Wave, Aebersold 98. Play lead line on first chorus, comp the second, improvise the third and fourth.

  • PIANO AND VIBRAPHONE
    • Play the etude Sweet Georgia, (vibes play lead line only: piano lead and comp) found on pages 58-61 from the book Effective Etudes for Jazz, by Jeff Jarvis with track 35 from the accompaniment CD.
    • Comp two choruses of Fast Blues in F, Aebersold vol. 2
    • Play four choruses of Triste, Aebersold 98. Play lead line on first chorus, comp the second, improvise the third and fourth.

  • BASS
    • Play the etude It’s From Heaven found on pages 14-15 in the book Effective Etudes for Jazz, by Jeff Jarvis with track 26 from the accompaniment CD.
    • “Walk” through the etude My Glowing Moment found on pages 30-31 in the book Effective Etudes for Jazz, by Jeff Jarvis with track 34 from the accompaniment CD.

  • DRUMS - The audition will be selected from the following requirements.
    • Play along with the following tracks from John Riley’s book The Art of Bop Drumming and Beyond Bop Drumming. Catch all written figures and provide appropriate comping throughout each example. (the balance control will be adjusted to remove the recorded drums for auditions).
      1. Track 41; Last Week : Shuffle feel for the “A” section, “2” feel for the B sections.
      2. Track 44; Satch & Diz: A sections with a 4/4 Bridge. Use brushes for the head and both choruses of the piano solo, swith to sticks for the remainder of the piece.
      3. Track 42; What Is That Thing Called? Play the piece as is with once chorus of solo drums added at the end of the coda. (exactly 32 measures of 4/4 in AABA form in time)
      4. Samba: half note = 120. 4/4 time, play exactly 16 full measures. Use idiomatic comping/fills, play with sticks and or brushes.
      5. Salsa(Mambo): half note = 110, 2:3 clave, play exactly 16 full measures, use idiomatic comping/fills, play with sticks throughout.

Requirements for the PMEA District 7 Vocal Jazz Ensemble

  • VOCALIST - The audition will be selected from the following requirements.
    • Sing Misty found on page 3 from It Had To Be You pgs: 19-20: 24 Standards in Singer’s Key, Aebersold volume 107. Sing unaccompanied using the lyrics in ballad tempo. Change the key to suit your range. Sing once complete chorus.
    • Sing A Foggy Day found on page 18 of It Had To Be You: 24 Standards in Singer’s Key, Aebersold volume 107. Sing one chorus unaccompanied using scat syllables. Change the key to suit your range.
    • Sing What Is This Thing Called Love? found on page 32, using the accompaniment provided with It Had To Be You: 24 Standards in Singer’s Keys, Volume 107 by Jamey Aebersold. Sing the first chorus using melody and lyrics; improvise on the second and third chorus using scat syllables. Stylistically appropriate interpretations of the melody are acceptable.

 

PART B (For all except rhythm section and vocalist)

Perform one complete chorus of the ballad You Don’t Know What Love Is, page 6, Aebersold, volume 32. Stylistically appropriate interpretation of the head is acceptable.

 

PART C (For all instruments except drums and vocalists. Saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass and vibe players must complete this portion.)

Improvise two choruses over the changes to The Moon is High, page 16, found in Effective Etudes for Jazz by Mike Carubia & Jeff Jarvis.

The supplied CD accompaniment must be used during the audition.

 

PART D

Optional Lead Excerpt- Optional excerpt for lead alto, lead trumpet, lead trombone and bass trombone. Perform a short excerpt of your choice that best demonstrates your lead/bass playing ability.

Note:
Part A: An excerpt may be selected for the wind auditionees; they may not be asked to play the entire work, especially parts of brass solos with extended range demands.

Part B: Students will perform the entire ballad.

Part C: Students will perform all of the improvisation. Only two choruses will be evaluated. Students may interpret the head for one or both choruses.
